OLED iPad mini Is Here: Big Upgrades and One Price Catch

OLED iPad mini 2026 headline over an iPad mini on a desk with an Apple Pencil

The OLED iPad mini is finally real, and it is not the gentle refresh most people expected. Apple announced the new eighth-generation iPad mini on Monday, Oct. 26, with an 8.5-inch OLED screen, a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, IP67 water resistance and speakers that play sound through the display itself. It also costs $699 to start, which is where the story gets more complicated.

If you have been holding out for an OLED iPad mini since the rumors started years ago, this is the version you were waiting for. But there is a catch hiding in the spec sheet, a big question about which storage tier to buy, and a busy week of Apple news still ahead. Here is everything that is confirmed so far, what it actually means for buyers in the US, and where the fine print matters.

Key Takeaways

  • The new iPad mini has an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display with up to 1,200 nits peak brightness, according to Apple.
  • It runs on the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2nm process, with up to 4.5x faster AI performance than the previous model.
  • Pre-orders open Wednesday, Oct. 28, and the tablet arrives in stores Friday, Nov. 6.
  • Prices start at $699 (Wi-Fi, 128GB) and $849 (cellular); the 512GB model tops out at $1,149.
  • The 128GB and 256GB versions use a binned chip with fewer CPU cores, per GSMArena, so storage choice affects speed.
  • The screen is still 60Hz, and Touch ID stays in the top button.

OLED iPad mini at a glance: what Apple announced on Oct. 26

Apple is calling this "the biggest update ever" for the iPad mini, and on paper it is hard to argue. The Apple Newsroom announcement lists changes to almost every major part of the device: the display, the chip, the speakers, the cameras, the wireless chips and the build.

The headline is the screen. The new iPad mini moves from an LCD panel to an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display. Apple says the bezels are 24 percent thinner, which is how it fits a larger screen into the same footprint as the previous model. The tablet is also thinner at 5.4 mm, and GSMArena reports it weighs 255 grams, down from 297 grams on the 6.3 mm predecessor.

It arrives exactly two years and three days after the previous iPad mini, as TechRadar pointed out. Apple sells it in two finishes, midnight and starlight. The blue, purple and space gray colors from the last generation are gone.

Apple also added IP67 water and dust resistance. The company says the tablet can survive a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes, which is a first for the iPad mini and a real upgrade for people who read in the bath, cook with recipes on screen or toss the tablet into a beach bag.

That sounds like a clean win. But what you get depends on which model you buy, and the screen numbers are bigger than they first appear.

The 8.5-inch OLED display: brighter, deeper, but still 60Hz

According to Apple, the new OLED panel reaches up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, more than double the previous model. TechRadar notes the old LCD mini topped out at 500 nits. Full-screen brightness is rated at 600 nits for both SDR and HDR content, and the contrast ratio is listed at 2,000,000:1. The display can also dim down to a single nit, which matters more than it sounds if you read in bed.

GSMArena lists the resolution as 2,316 x 1,512 pixels. Apple is also offering a nano-texture glass option to cut glare, the same type of matte finish it sells on some Macs and the iPad Pro. TechRadar reports that nano-texture requires at least 256GB of storage and adds $100, so the cheapest way to get it is $899.

Here is the catch we promised. The refresh rate is still 60Hz. Apple has kept its smooth 120Hz ProMotion technology exclusive to the iPad Pro, so scrolling and Apple Pencil strokes on the mini will not feel as fluid as on Apple's most expensive tablets. For reading, note-taking and streaming this season's big movie releases once they reach digital, this is fine. For anyone who uses an iPhone or iPad Pro with ProMotion every day, the difference is noticeable.

There is no Face ID either. Touch ID remains in the top button, which some people prefer because it works with the tablet lying flat on a table.

A20 Pro chip: the new iPad mini's AI pitch, explained

The second big change is the processor. Apple says the A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process and pairs a CPU with up to six cores with a 7-core GPU that includes Neural Accelerators in each core. Apple claims up to 4.5 times faster AI performance and up to 2.7 times faster graphics than the previous iPad mini, plus up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance. It also says unified memory bandwidth has more than doubled.

That AI focus is not an accident. The tablet ships with iPadOS 27, and Apple says the new Siri features arrive in beta. According to Apple, iPadOS 27.2 adds support for English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and those Siri features are not available in the European Union at launch. The same update brings an extended display mode for connecting to an external monitor.

Big AI claims are everywhere in tech right now, as we saw when Meta lined up a record $95 billion raise to fund its AI build-out. On a tablet, though, the real question is simpler: does the chip make everyday apps faster and keep the device useful for five or six years? On specs alone, the A20 Pro looks like a large jump. But the full chip is not in every model.

The storage tier catch: 5-core vs 6-core

Apple's newsroom post says the CPU has "up to" six cores, and the phrase matters. GSMArena reports that the 128GB and 256GB models use a binned version of the chip with a 5-core CPU and half of the Neural Engine. TechRadar describes the 5-core setup as two performance cores and three efficiency cores.

Apple says the 512GB model gets a dual 16-core Neural Engine. In plain terms, if you want every bit of AI and multitasking power Apple is advertising, you have to buy the most expensive storage tier. For most people who read, stream, browse and take notes, the 5-core version should be plenty. Power users who edit video, run heavy games or plan to lean on on-device AI features should weigh the 512GB model carefully.

Apple has not confirmed the amount of RAM, according to TechRadar; teardowns usually reveal it after launch.

Speakers in the screen, cameras and connectivity

One of the more unusual features is what Apple calls an Acoustic Display. The company says woofers fire sound through the display itself, while tweeters sit between the glass and the aluminum frame. The goal is fuller audio from a very thin body; early reviews will show how well it works.

The front 12MP Center Stage camera now sits on the landscape edge, which is where it belongs for video calls with the tablet in a keyboard case or stand. The rear 12MP camera can shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second and has an Adaptive True Tone flash.

Wireless gets a boost from Apple's own chips. The N1 chip adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support, and Apple says its C2 modem makes cellular speeds up to 50 percent faster on the cellular model. GSMArena lists a USB-C port with USB 3 speeds of 10Gb/s, an 18.9Wh battery and fast charging to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 35W or higher adapter.

OLED iPad mini price and release date in the US

Pricing is where the OLED iPad mini will divide people. Here is the US price list as reported by GSMArena and confirmed in Apple's announcement for the starting tiers:

  • 128GB: $699 Wi-Fi, $849 Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • 256GB: $799 Wi-Fi, $949 Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • 512GB: $999 Wi-Fi, $1,149 Wi-Fi + Cellular

Apple says education pricing starts at $649. The new Smart Folio in a TechWoven material costs $79 in navy or taupe. The Apple Pencil Pro costs $129, and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) is $79.

For context, the previous seventh-generation iPad mini started at $499 when it launched in 2024. TechRadar reports that its price had already risen to $599 in June 2026, so the jump to $699 is smaller than it looks if you compare against what the old model cost this summer. Still, the iPad mini is no longer the "budget small iPad" it once was.

Pre-orders open Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to Apple, in 36 countries. MacRumors reports orders go live at 10:10 a.m. Pacific Time. The tablet is available in stores and starts arriving to customers on Friday, Nov. 6.

That timing lands right before the biggest shopping stretch of the year. Our guide to Black Friday 2026 dates and early sales explains how retailers are planning the season. Brand-new Apple products rarely see deep discounts in their first month.

Should you upgrade? Who the new iPad mini is for

Your answer depends mostly on the iPad you already own.

Upgrade if you have an older iPad mini

If you own a sixth-generation iPad mini or earlier, the leap to OLED, IP67, a 2nm chip and Wi-Fi 7 is enormous. You get a brighter, thinner, lighter tablet with a screen that is noticeably larger in the same size body.

Think twice if you bought the 2024 model

The seventh-generation mini already supports Apple Intelligence features and the Apple Pencil Pro. The OLED screen and water resistance are real upgrades, but the 60Hz refresh rate means the daily feel will be familiar. If your current mini works well, waiting for reviews is the sensible move.

Consider the alternatives

If you want the smoothest Pencil experience, the iPad Pro's 120Hz display is still the benchmark. The mini makes the most sense for people who value one-handed use and portability, such as travelers. What else Apple is launching this week

The iPad mini is just one part of a crowded Apple calendar. TechRadar reports that the second-generation HomePod mini arrives Oct. 30, and new Apple TV 4K hardware alongside a HomeView device lands Nov. 13.

MacRumors also reports that Apple is holding a hands-on media event it calls "Pro and Tell" in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 28, with more announcements expected by press release. According to MacRumors' preview, products rumored for that date include an OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro with a Dynamic Island and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, an entry-level MacBook Pro with an M6 chip, and an M6 iMac. None of those are confirmed until Apple announces them, so treat that list as reporting, not fact.

Apple also says the new iPad mini uses 35 percent recycled content overall.
