Yemen Airstrikes: Houthi Rebels Pose Serious Threat, Warns Former Navy Chief

In the aftermath of the UK and US-led airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen, former British Navy chief Admiral Lord West has issued a stark warning, emphasizing that the Houthi rebels are not to be underestimated. The Iranian-backed militant group, known for its resilience, has pledged fierce retaliation following the bombing of nearly 30 military sites utilized by the rebels in Yemen. This military response was prompted by recent attacks in the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebels have been on the offensive, conducting numerous attacks against commercial shipping since late November. Despite claiming that these assaults are aimed at halting Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, many of the targeted ships have no discernible connection to Israel. The situation escalated further as the Houthis, in a chilling declaration, vowed that the US-led airstrikes would not go unanswered, promising "punishment or retaliation" after five of their fighters were reportedly killed in the overnight attacks.

On Friday afternoon, reports emerged of a missile being fired at a vessel off the coast of Yemen, initially believed to have links to the UK. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations received the report of the missile attack, occurring 90 miles from Aden. Fortunately, the targeted ship reported no injuries or damage and continued on its route to the next port of call. However, maritime vessels have been cautioned to "transit with caution" in the region.

The incident underscores the volatile nature of the conflict and the potential for miscalculations amid rising tensions. As international stakeholders closely monitor developments, Admiral Lord West's warning serves as a reminder that the Houthi rebels should not be underestimated, and any further military actions must be approached with a thorough understanding of the complexities in the region.
