Modi's Power Play: Aastha, Vikas, and ₹19,100 Crore

The Prime Minister is anticipated to blend aastha (faith) and vikas (development) as he presents the party's case for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to commence the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign by unveiling development initiatives totaling more than ₹19,100 crore at a rally in Bulandshahr, West Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday. Coming just three days after the inauguration of the grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and the consecration of the new Ram Lalla idol, the Prime Minister is expected to integrate aastha and vikas in articulating the party's appeal for the Lok Sabha election.

The BJP has already outlined a two-month-long series of events centered around the Ram temple to galvanize party members and supporters for the upcoming election. Bhupendra Chaudhary, the President of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, stated, "It's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initial rally in Uttar Pradesh following the consecration of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. The BJP has marshaled its resources to ensure the success of the rally, conducting a fortnight-long public outreach initiative in West Uttar Pradesh to guarantee a robust turnout for the PM's rally."

Bulandshahr, situated in West Uttar Pradesh, boasts a significant population comprising Lodh Rajputs, Jats, Gujjars, Muslims, and Dalits, all regarded as integral components of the BJP's traditional support base. Kalyan Singh, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and erstwhile Governor of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, had established Bulandshahr as a BJP stronghold, securing the Lok Sabha seat in successive elections since 1991, except for 2009 when Kamlesh Valmiki of the Samajwadi Party emerged victorious.

In the 2022 assembly election, the BJP triumphed in all seven assembly seats in Bulandshahr. The party had secured eight out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in this western part of Uttar Pradesh in 2019 and now aims to clinch the remaining seats that had eluded it in the face of the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party (SP-BSP) alliance.

The Samajwadi Party and the Congress, the opposition parties, are also directing their efforts toward West Uttar Pradesh, seeking to garner support from Muslims, Jats, and Dalits to pose a challenge to the BJP. Rahul Gandhi's Congress Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will traverse West Uttar Pradesh, covering districts from Saharanpur to Shahjahanpur, while the PDA (Pichda, Dalit, Alpasankhak) Yatra initiated by the Samajwadi Party will encompass various districts in West Uttar Pradesh.
